During a recent short holiday, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan visited the popular resort of Bodrum and decided the fate of unauthorized development on the Turkish coast. The Prime Minister described the situation as unacceptable, since the construction is already at the water's edge, destroying the coastline itself. Erdogan together with the Minister of the Environment circled the coastline by helicopter and admitted that he did not expect to see such catastrophic consequences of illegal construction.
The prime minister also criticized the leadership of local municipalities that have made such a mess. Erdogan has promised the court to punish the officials at fault. And all the illegal buildings will be demolished after the special inspection.
Erdogan's anger seriously scared of stakeholders in Mugla and Bodrum. The Mayor of Bodrum Mehmet Kocadon made a statement that most of the buildings erected on the shore, was built with the approval of the following ministries of culture and tourism, forestry and the environment. Environmentalists shake their heads and say that the current problem has been brewing for a long time.
