Eurostat has estimated the number of property owners in Europe. The leaders are Romania (about 97% of the population lives in its own property), Bulgaria (96%), Lithuania and Slovakia (95%), Latvia, Slovenia and Poland (90%). The smallest number of homeowners was registered in Switzerland (5%), the Netherlands, Iceland, Sweden and Denmark (from 8% to 10%).
As for the type of buildings, the largest number of EU citizens, living in the apartments, observed in Latvia (65%), Spain (65%) and Estonia (64%). Apartments are not popular in Norway (5%), the UK, Belgium and the Netherlands (10%), but citizens of these countries respect their own homes (60% to 70%).
According to European statistics, about 41% of the EU population lives in apartments, 34% - in detached houses and 23% - in the townhouses. The greatest amount of space is having the inhabitants of the Netherlands (the percentage of overcrowding is 1.7%) and Belgium (2.2%), the lowest - Romania (54%), Bulgaria, Poland and Hungary (47%). In the EU average overpopulation is 17%.
Every fifth inhabitant of the EU pays the rent of their homes very little or no pay, Eurostat data shows.
