Compared to 2010, the number of foreigners who visited Portugal in 2011, has grown by 10,4% and the number of spent nights - by 5,9%.
Officials from the National Institute of Statistics reported, the largest number of tourists came to Portugal from Brazil (23,8%), France (18,9%) and the United Kingdom (14,4%).
In total, tourists spent in hotels of the country 40 000 000 nights (26 000 000 nights were booked by foreign tourists and 14 000 000 – by locals).
Tourism is a major sector of the economy and accounts 14% of GDP. The authorities contribute to the development of tourism infrastructure. Thus, in 2011 the number of real estate objects in the hotel sector increased by 5,7%.
