Russian investors were the most numerous in the property market in Hungary in 2012. Of the 1,186 foreigners, who have received permission to buy property in the country, 445 were Russians (37.5%), reported portal BBJ, citing data from the Ministry of Public Administration and Justice of Hungary.
In addition to Russian citizens, many foreign buyers of real estate in Hungary were Chinese (150 persons, 12.6%) and Ukrainians (128, 10.8%).
In 2012, non-residents purchased 1,110 objects. This was more than in 2011, when just over 1,000 foreigners bought real estate in Hungary. The influx of foreign investors was caused by low housing prices, which have fallen by 25-30% since the start of the financial crisis.
