25,000 houses in Spain are rescued from demolition

In accordance with the legislation, authorities of Spanish Andalusia have to approve the demolition of private houses built without a permit. There are many such buildings in the region: during pre-crisis construction boom period corrupted officials turned a blind eye to illegal development. Share of foreigners who actively acquired such homes is high among the potential victims, says ee24.com citing spanishpropertyinsight.com.

The problem of illegal construction in Spain is not new and is gradually solved at the local level. Physical demolition of high-quality homes is the last step, which hopefully won’t be made. Today the regional parliament unveiled amnesty plan for owners of 25,000 such houses, most of which are concentrated in the Axarquía Costa del Sol area in the province of Malaga.

In total, 250,000 illegal buildings appeared during the construction boom in Andalusia and until recently the authorities were willing to legalize only major projects. Now private owners will be also able to get out of the shadows. "Finally, it seems that political and social consensus on the issue of illegal houses in Andalucia is reached", Maura Hillen, President of the AUAN Union of homeowners, happily comments the news.
