Slovenian government considers intervention on the housing market

The state-owned Housing Fund is looking into ways of either buying unsold homes below market value and leasing with deferred purchase or leasing in the traditional way, according to minister Zvonko Cernac.

If the project succeeds, the Housing Fund would become a financial and property institution that would provide long-term incentives for leasing, added the minister. Housing Fund has enough capital, 400 000 000 – 500 000 000 euro, to buy or lease about 3 000 apartments.

The minister noted that the project hinges on the overall financial situation in the country: if the supplementary budget makes state borrowing cheaper, implementation will become much more realistic.
