The longest building in Europe was sold in Poland

Modlin fortress was sold at an auction in Poland. It is known for the longest building in Europe which is located on its territory. The winner was the development company, which bought item for 17.85 million PLN (about €4 million). The money from the sale of the fortress will go to the needs of the Polish Army, said portal ee24.com.

It is planned that the fortress, located near Warsaw, will be converted into a hotel and tourist complex. A prerequisite of the contest was to maintain the free access to the historic sites, the reconstruction of which will be carried out under the strict supervision of the authorities.

In 2003, the facility was put on the balance sheet of the Ministry of Defence of Poland. Since 2008 there have been 8 auctions, but the high price of the order that was €53 million ($ 70 million), discouraged potential buyers. Now the price has been seriously reduced.

Modlin Fortress (Polish Twierdza Modlin), located in the village of Modlin at the confluence of the Vistula and Narew, was founded by Napoleon in 1806. In 1813 it was occupied by Russian troops, and in 1830 the Emperor Nicholas I ordered  to expand the castle. Just in process of modernization  the brick barracks length of 2.25 kilometers were built in the fortress.

The complex is located on the area of 58 hectares and includes 40 buildings. In the years of peace the barracks could accommodate 20,000 people at a time.

In the ranking of the world's longest buildings Modlin fortress is in the fourth place. The first three places are the Great Wall of China (8,852 km), Fort Ranikot in Pakistan (35 km) and the Klystron gallery of the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center in the U.S. (3 km).
