Vilnius for people: renovation of abandoned areas is in high gear

The authorities have decided to use the territory of two former soviet times factories for building the mall and the Centre of Social Sciences. On the third plot, which previously housed the Vismalyuksky firing range, works were already started, according to ee24.com citing the baltic-course.com.

The Mayor of Vilnius Arturas Zuokas took part in the ceremony marking the start of construction of the Center for Applied Research of Photovoltaics, which is due to open in mid-2013 in Vismalyukskaya Innovative Investment Zone.

Zuokas believes that this will be the first major center to encourage national science, industry and business to work together. The mayor added that businessmen from Spain, Italy, Germany, Taiwan and South Korea are already interested in the project. Renovation of abandoned areas, according Zuokas, enhances and improves the image of the Lithuanian capital.

By the way, the Centre will cost investors (the largest of them is the EU) 17 million lits (almost €5 million), including the equipment of 12 million lits (about €3.5 million). About a hundred of highly skilled professionals will be able to take full advantage of the latest technologies.

After this Centre opening, other Centres will be build (on biomedical research, renewable energy, biotechnology industry etc).
