Piedmont named the best region for the assimilation of migrants in Italy, Calabria is recognized as the worst. It is reported by ee24.com with reference to portal The Local.
Research of the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy of Italy showed that the best regions for migrants assimilation are Piedmont, Liguria and Emilia-Romagna.
Maurizio Maggi from the Institute of Social and Economic Research considers that the case is in the political and social development of the region. The degree of citizen participation in the political life of the region is very high, and among the MPs and political figures is a large number of women which have a positive effect on the attitude towards foreigners.
The capital of Lombardy Milan ranked 11t and the region of Lazio, where Rome is located, was 14th in the ranking. Calabria showed the worst result of all the 20 regions, while its southern neighbor, Apulia, was the penultimate.
The research was based on three factors. The first - the attractiveness of the region, including the performance and stability of the birth rate. The situation with immigrants in the labor market is also a key factor with social factors, including language study and citizenship.
Italy is among the top three most welcoming countries for foreigners in Europe. However, the question of citizenship has sparked debate in Italy as integration minister Cecil Kienge insisting on reform, allowing the children of immigrants to become Italian. This step is opposed by many parties, such as "Northern League" acting against immigrants.
