Churchill’s apartment is for sale with a tricky scheme

A huge apartment, where British politician and Prime Minister Winston Churchill lived in the 1930s has gone on the market in central London. However, the apartments cannot find its buyer for a month, probably due to incredibly high price (€6.68 million) and the peculiar purchase conditions (actually it’s 43 year lease), – informs ee24.com with reference to British media.

The apartment is situated in 17 Grosvenor Square in Mayfair, London's respectable Westminster district, where most expensive offices are located. There are 3 bedrooms, a huge ballroom (113 sq. m and ceiling height of 6 m), 2 restrooms, reception room, dining room for 200-350 people (capacity depends on the type of event: a cocktail party, dinner, etc.). In the 1930s London aristocrats often gathered in the apartment of Winston Churchill.

According to realtors, to hire the ballroom for a day event or evening would cost from €8,500 to €12,150.

Due to a tricky sale scheme (land where the apartment is located is in leasehold for 43 years, that does not guarantee an automatic property ownership transfer at the end of the lease period), the new owner will have to pay an annual ground rent of £135 (€164) plus service charge of £21,980 (€26,706), and after 43 years , if the owner wants to extend the contract for 120 years, to pay another €1,5 million, with the apartments value increasing to €9 million.
