Italy, San Marino sign TIE Protocol

A protocol for the exchange of tax information between Italy and San Marino was finally signed in Rome on June 13 by San Marino’s Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Antonella Mularoni, and the Italian Minister for Foreign Affairs, Giulio Terzi di Sant’Agata.

Until recently, it had been found impossible to persuade Italy to sign the protocol which needed to be added to the San Marino-Italy double taxation agreement (DTA), which was signed in 2002 but never ratified by Italy. Negotiation of the text of the protocol was itself completed in June 2009.

It is hoped that the protocol’s signing, and its subsequent ratification together with the DTA, and the ratification of the other financial and economic cooperation agreements negotiated between the two countries in previous years, will lead to a much closer bilateral relationship.
