About the project
What was once the defense site of Utrecht will develop in the coming years into a lively, contemporary city district: De Nieuwe Defense. At this special place – right next to the national monument Jongerius – a mix of starters, families and seniors will soon find their home. Their new neighborhood is car-free and sustainable. And green, thanks to a brand new city park on the Merwede Canal, beautiful playgrounds and roof (vegetable) gardens. A striking detail is the sky walk that connects two residential towers, the houses in between and a number of roof (vegetable) gardens. And all that just a 10-minute walk from the center of Utrecht…
The approximately 800 social rented homes, mid-term rental homes and private sector homes that form this new city quarter are diverse in architecture and type. They are located in different blocks, each with its own appearance. And with a beautiful communal courtyard. There is sufficient space under the residential buildings for (electric) cars and bicycles.
The New Defense is developing in phases. At the beginning of 2021, the festive go-ahead was given for the construction of the first phase, which consists of 80 social rental homes and 211 owner-occupied homes. The Municipality of Utrecht, Mitros, BPD and ERA Contour work closely together on this. BPD is developing the homes. ERA Contour is responsible for the construction. And housing corporation Mitros rents out the social housing in the project.
