Sweden: foreigners snap up holiday houses

The number of foreigners who own holiday houses in Sweden has doubled since 2000, reports the portal The Local.

According to Statistics Sweden (Statistiska centralbyrån - SCB), the number of owners of summer homes increased by 99% to 36,000 in 2012.

The most popular holiday houses enjoyed by the citizens of Denmark (12,000 property owners), Germany and Norway (10,000). About half of all homes in the Swedish province of Skåne and Värmland are owned by foreigners, and the city Markaryd - 59%.
