Spanish citizenship for foreigners: changing the rules

Spanish citizenship for foreigners: changing the rules

Since October 15, foreigners wishing to obtain citizenship in Spain, will take the double exam.

The changes will affect those foreigners who already reside in the country. The period of permanent residence in Spain is still 10 years (except for citizens of the former Spanish colonies and refugees).

The new exam will consist of two parts: the first is an international examination for knowledge of the Spanish language DELE, level A2 or higher (exempt citizens of countries where Spanish is the official language); and the second - an examination on the Spanish Constitution, social policy and cultural heritage of Spain.

Both parts of the exam will be standardized upon the development of the Cervantes Institute, in contrast to previous practice, when applicants for Spanish nationality, were interviewed at the Department of Civil Registry Office or the police department, and particular officials made decisions about what questions to ask and defined whether to give the citizenship.

Citizenship will be issued electronically via the Directorate General of civil status and notaries' offices, and will be paid (€ 100).
