British houses are the smallest in the EU

Cambridge University study revealed that newly built British houses are the smallest in Europe, while Danish houses are the most spacious, reports ee24.ru citing telegraph.co.uk. The average area of new homes in the UK is 76 sq.m, in Ireland - 87.7 sq.m, in Germany - 109.2 sq.m, in the Netherlands - 115.5 sq.m, while in Denmark - 137 sq.m.

Between a quarter and a third of Britons are dissatisfied with size of their homes. Half of houses in Britain have less floor space than the national standards prescribe, and 20% of homes fall below the standard when it comes to number of square meters per person.

Malcolm Morgan, co-author of the study, explains that in rare cases overcrowding can lead to physical illnesses such as asthma, as well as to mental illnesses, such as depression. In more frequent cases it can cause anxiety or stress, and also to impact negatively on the social and emotional development of children.
