The company IKEA, famous worldwide distributor of furniture and home furnishings, is going to produce 30,000 homes designed for refugees in Africa. Price of one such house in format DIY (Do It Yourself) won't exceed €500, according to ee24.com citing repubblica.it.
While 10.4 million Africans, including 3.2 million children, have to huddle in tents that fall to pieces within six months, IKEA prepares them a similar cost houses with a lifespan of three years and more. Climate of the continent is ideal for inexpensive temporary structures: houses made of plastic weigh 120 kg and can be assembled as easily as the famous shelvings Billy. This decision is not only durable, but also comfortable: there will be solar panels on the roofs to generate electricity enough for lighting and cooking.
It is reported that temporary houses have been tested on the border between Somalia and Ethiopia and showed their reliability.
