85% of EU citizens haven't been outside of Europe

In 2012, Europeans made ​​1.2 billion trips with at least one overnight stay, and 85.4% of them were made within Europe. Moreover, 76% of trips were made within one state, writes ee24.com citing Eurostat. Spain, France and Italy were the most popular destinations among EU28 residents.

Almost half of the trips was related with tourism and recreation (48%), one third - with visiting friends and relatives (35%), one eighth - with business (13%). Europeans prefer to travel by car (65%), while planes (15%), trains (12%) and buses (6%) are much less popular. 

Romanians (95%), Spaniards and Greeks (both 92%), Portuguese (90%) and French (89%) prefer to travel within their own countries. Citizens of small countries such as Luxembourg (97%), Belgium (78%) and Malta (60%) prefer to have a rest abroad.
