November 9, 2016 the Parliament of Catalonia with 72 votes against 63 approved the decision to start separating of province from Spain. Recall that after winning the local elections on September 27 by the independence coalition "Together" (they got 62 seats in Parliament of autonomous region), the question of separation was accelerated. November 5 Spain's Constitutional Court rejected a petition of separation opponents, demanding to ban Catalan Parliament discussion of this resolution.
However, challenging the resolution is still possible through the Constitutional Court.
Within thirty days the development of draft laws is to begin concerning the constitutional process of separation of Catalonia, responsible for social affairs and the functioning of financial institutions.
Opponents called yesterday events "the biggest challenge to democracy in the last 30 years." They also point to the lack of an absolute decision support in the community and insist on unrepresentative voting results. Many agree that the current stage of the conflict is a part of political game in an effort to ensure the autonomous region budgets expansion from the Centre.
For commentary on the possible scenarios in the real estate market in Catalonia and Barcelona in particular, we have addressed to the director of the Catalan real estate agency «EuropaHome» Helen Gross. According to expert, "most likely, a new round of political battles will not play for a fall of property prices in the region. Local people always have a high purchasing power, and this situation is unlikely to change radically in the near future. As for foreigners interested in buying property in Barcelona, for them the main factors has always been the highly-developed infrastructure, security, investment attractiveness and accessibility of the region, and this will not change, even if Catalonia will be separated. Moreover, it is likely that talk about the separation will remain only talk".
