Latvia: Amendments to the Immigration Law

Latvian Saeima supported in  second reading the amendments to the immigration law.

In particular, the Cabinet of Ministers will be given the opportunity to refuse to grant a residence permit, if it has an impact on national security and economic development of the country, or the number of third-country nationals with a residence permit on certain territory becomes excessive. Restrictions may be administered for a period up to 5 years.

 In addition, the alien may also be deprived of his residence permit if its debt to the Internal Revenue Service of Latvia exceeds € 150.

Parliament had supported the proposal that the residence permit can be obtained outside the Riga region in the amount of 250 thousand euro were bought two properties (previously the buyer could pretend  on a residence permit only if he purchaseв one object worth more than 250K). Parliament hopes that this measure will promote the development of the regional real estate market in Latvia.

Again was rejected the proposal by the National Association "All for Latvia" of refusal to granting a residence permit for the purchase of real estate. Other similar proposals  of the association were also rejected - in particular, the proposal to refuse to grant a residence permit in the event that the alien is a citizen of the state, whose citizens in the previous year received 30% of all the issued residence permits, and that the documents on the granting of a residence permit It can not be in Russian.

Under the current rules, requests for residence permit can be submitted in Latvian, English, French, Russian or German. This rule will not be changed.
