An old fortress on the Maggiore Island on Lake Trasimeno (Umbria region in Italy) has gone on sale for approx. €4 million. Price is cheaper than the average townhouse in London's elite district of Westminster, according to the British media of dailymail.co.uk.
The island boasts the castle with the total area of 3,000 sq.m, six battle towers and a central bell tower, and an old mill, some village houses, a church, forests, beaches and two marinas. The population of the island is 35 people, but they are not for sale. You can only buy the castle and the surrounding area. First the property was put up for sale in 2010, but nobody bought it.
The castle has two residential floors with 10 bedrooms and 3 courtyards. It overlooks the beach in Passignano sul Trasimeno on the opposite shore of the lake. It often hosts concerts and festivals.
The estate was founded Church of St. Francis in 1328, which grew to include a monastery. The castle tripled in size after renovations from 1885 to 1891, and it's called Castle Guglielmi by the name of the Marquis Guglielmi, and the date of its creation is the end of the 19th century.
The cause of an affordable price (for the whole castle!) is probably low status of Trasimeno Lake, as in Italy there is high demand for property in the "northern" lakes: Iseo, Garda, Maggiore, Como and Lugano. In addition, the castle is a historical monument, under state protection, and restoration will require additional funding and approval. In the future, the building will be converted into a hotel, or use as a private residence.
