Italian authorities want to sell the old prisons to built the new ones

Perhaps very soon on the websites of the Italian real estate agencies will appear a few unusual objects. Italian authorities want to sell the old prison buildings, built 100-300 years ago.

"Regina Coeli" is one of the oldest functioning prisons in Rome. It was built on the banks of the Tiber in the 17th century. Now it contains about 600 prisoners. Milan's “San Vittore" dates back to 1879. A little later in Naples in 1914 was built "Poggioreale", with 1700 seats.

Selling can touch 12 Italian prison complexes, but for the first, the authorities plan to sell these 3. The money will be spent on the construction of new well-equipped prisons. It is planned that these new correctional facilities will be built according to European standards.

According to the Italian Minister of justice, who recently announced this unexpected proposal, the former prison space can be turned into hotels, restaurants or refurbish and use as a residence.

It should be noted that about a year ago it was reported that the UK has offered to sell the old prison of the Victorian era with the same purpose – to resettle prisoners in the best conditions. In Italy the problem of the overcrowding of the prisons is very relevant: 100 places for 108 prisoners.
