For the Italian branch of apartment rental service Airbnb new rules for hosts were introduced. Now, under the new "Law on Tourism", the owners of apartments and houses in Lombardy (including Milan) equated in their responsibilities with hotels: they will have to register the arriving guests, provide information to the police station and take the tax for accommodation.
Before hosts did not have any formal obligations to the police and tax authorities. The purpose of innovation is to bring the rental market from the gray zone.
Also under the new law the owner can lease only the second and third housing, and is required to pay income taxes.
How the new measures will be implemented in practice - time will tell. According to statistics, last year more than 400 000 tourists in Italy used this rental service.
