House on Sicily for 1 euro: a success story of the village Gangi

France and Italy seem to be competing in sale houses in inhabited villages - not so long ago a similar event was held in Normandy, a few areas in Tuscany at different times also have made similar suggestions.

But in general, one of the founders of the European movement "home for free" is an unremarkable.village Gangi near Palermo, Sicily. A thousand meters above sea level, seven thousand inhabitants, a huge number of damaged houses and the lack of opportunities for their recovery. And in 2011, the mayor Giuseppe Ferrarello offered to sell emergency houses in the historic center of the village at the price of 1 euro, and the buyer should restore the property in three years and maintain it in good condition. The proposal followed a barrage of criticism, but the idea has been realized.

More than 2,000 requests were received, more than 100 contracts signed and more than 30 renovations have already been completed. Recovery is on the outskirts and in the center - one of the houses in the historic center of the town was purchased by the buyer from Hungary. 8 houses were purchased by a large company from Florence, with the aim of building a hotel and restaurant.

The project continues, and the success story of a small Sicilian town has attracted worldwide attention and became an example for other European towns and cities.
