Estonia: amendments to the citizenship law entered into force

From 1 January 2016, amendments to the Estonian law, according to which children whose parents are not citizens of Estonia, but for a long time live in the country, automatically receive citizenship at birth.

Thus, from this year, children under fifteen years, whose parents have lived in Estonia for more than five years and do not have citizenship of the country, can apply for citizenship at birth. Throughout the year, parents can refuse to Estonian citizenship for their children.

Furthermore, according to the new amendments the citizens older than 65 years who apply for Estonian citizenship are exempt from the written examination.

The amendments also addressed the issue of dual nationality: a minor Estonian citizen has the right to hold dual citizenship. At 21 years of age one of the nationalities will need to be abandoned.
