Heltermaa port is located 5 km Northwest from the islet, Hiiumaas east peak Sarve is 2,5 kilometers to the West, Vormsi island is situated 13 kilometers north and Rohuküla is 18 kilometers Northeast. Heltermaa-Rohuküla waterway passes 3 kilometers North from the islet.
Heinlaid is situated in the Väinamere conservation area. Due to that you can change the intended land use and get a construction permit only with the approval of the Environmental Board. According to the general planning the area does not need a detailed planning, construction prohibition zone starts from 200m to the shore. The smallest plot of land eligible for a construction permit is 1 ha.
